About Me:
My name is Victoria. I’m from Clare but currently live in Cork for my research. I recently completed my undergraduate degree in pharmaceutical chemistry. I enjoy set-dancing, piano and going to the gym. I enjoyed chemistry in college and really liked my placement in a pharmaceutical company for the summer so I decided that I would like to become a researcher. I now live with my friends in Cork very near to UCC. Over the years I went to Science and chemistry balls at UCC which I really enjoyed.

I recently joined the UCC canoe club and the UCC chess club. This offers the opportunity to meet loads of other students in different courses. I made lots of friends from my course and I’m also still friends with one of my secondary school friends who is studying biomedical science. Everyday I go for lunch on campus with my friends which gives me a nice break to the day. I enjoy researching and feel like the day goes by very quickly.
I also went to America (South Carolina) during the Summer with a J1 visa with my friend from my course who is also a PhD researcher now. We worked in the beach for the Summer and travelled around America for two weeks at the end of the Summer. I have a cat and dog named Misty and Max who live with my family in Clare. I regularly visit my family and my pets.
Below is an image of my friend and I kayaking down the Chicago river during our J1 in America.

I’m researching in the area of carbon to carbon bond formation. Previously this was carried out using transition elements as catalysts but these are very expensive and not very sustainable. The aim of my work is to try to form carbon-carbon bonds using light called photochemistry in a continuous manner.

My Typical Day:
I wake up at 7/8 and have breakfast. Every second morning I also go to the UCC Maradyke gym. I arrive at college at 9. I continue with the experiment that I was looking at before. I also research online to read previous papers in this area. I meet my friends at 12:30 for lunch. I then return to my work. Sometimes I also go for coffee wtih a friends at 3:30 I go home at 5pm and cook my dinner. I also chat to my friends and sometimes watch a movie/show. Recently we are watching the great british bake off together. I also do activities such as Zumba, canoeing or chess some evenings.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’m an organiser of PAL (peer assisted learning) at UCC. This is set-up for first year students who didn’t study chemistry in their leaving cert. Students from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year volunteer to help these students on Tuesday evenings for an hour. If I was to win the prize I would use this money to contribute to PAL. We would like to introduce molecular orbital kits to aid the students to get a better understanding for structures in chemistry.

I volunteered in 3rd and 4th year of my undergraduate degree to help first year students who were struggling with chemistry. I think the hardest part for them is to get a grasp of the structures in organic chemistry (such as alkanes and alkenes). I think this money would greatly help with this is we were able to purchase molecular orbital kits for the sessions. PAL at UCC has become increasingly popular this year with more PAL leaders from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year volunteering than previous year. There has also been a huge increase in 1st years attending and benefitting from the sessions. The sessions also give students a chance to get advice from students who have already been through the experience of beginning college.

Education:
Kilrush Community School in West Clare
-
Qualifications:
I got 553 in my leaving certificate and then went into Bioloigical and chemical science. In second year I chose chemistry of pharmaceutical compounds as my degree stream and continued with this until May of this year when I graduated. In September I began my PhD research at UCC with my supervisors who were my lecturers in my undergrad degree.
-
Work History:
I grew up on a farm and I have two younger brothers. One is studying chemical engineering and the other is in his leaving cert year. When I was 16 I began working in a take-away in Doonbeg cooking and serving food. During covid I worked in a shop as a shop assitant called Taltys in Clare. I also volunteer at my local youth club as a youth club supervisor.
My two brothers and I. Every year we go the Aran islands together for a day trip.

Current Job:
I currently work as a PhD researcher at UCC. I also demonstrate labs for pharmacy, chemistry and engineering students at UCC. Recently I joined CCI which involves going to secondary schools with other PhD researchers and teach them electroanalytical chemistry in a fun way.

Employer
I work at UCC. I also did my work placement at MSD in Ballydine. This is a pharmaceutical company. I was involved in the production of a new drug.
